“Stiff fingers spoil the look of port de bras. A simple exercise for young children is to have them kneel and then sit, shifting their weight to the side (like the position of the statue of The Little Mermaid in Copenhagen), moving the hands from side to side as though swishing through water. Then tell them to lift the hands (or one at a time) and wiggle the fingers, pretending that the water is dripping of.” Mignon Furman

        …………………………………from great knowledge comes wisdom!

“I have attended Performance Awards in many cities throughout the United States, in Moriyama, Japan, and in Durban, South Africa. On each occasion, I realize with a great sense of fulfillment how the Performance Awards have succeeded in their purpose. I realize this again, when teachers tell me of the progress of their students, and of the renewed enthusiasm with which they attend their classes. I see students grow positively tall with pride at receiving their award. Their parents are delighted at seeing their children perform on their own with such obvious enjoyment. I have been teaching ballet for more than 30 years: from children to university students and ballet teachers at graduate level. At the University of Cape Town I was Acting-Director of the Ballet School, and in charge of teacher-training.

I have put my knowledge and experience into the formulation of this program. I believe that it is of great value to teachers of ballet. I look upon the Performance Awards as both a permanent memento of the personal achievement of our young dancers, and a wonderful experience in ballet.”

                                                           Mignon Furman

It was 4 years ago that Academy of Ballet Performance Awards was brought to us by JLDC Upper School Ballet Mistress, Seo Yeon Hong, a devotee and AAB Affiliate who has adjudicated the Academy of Ballet program here and in NYC! In furthering Mignon’s teachings at JLDC, Sy will be promoting a great legacy of invaluable early dance training for our young dancers.

There are no words greater than her own that best demonstrate to us how deeply the loss of this great and wise teacher will be felt throughout the ballet world!

From all of us at Joanne Langione Dance Center;

Thank You, Mignon for all that you have taught us and for all that you have given to the world of Ballet!

…The Ultimate destination for….

JLDC Hip Hop Dancers PAST and Present!!

Tabitha and Napoleon, known together as Nappytabs, are award winning choreographers, dance teachers, creative directors and fashion designers. In 2003, they joined the Faculty of Monsters of Hip Hop Dance Convention, and soon after choreographed for hit shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” and provided creative direction for celebrity tours and live events. This Monsters of Hip Hop Duo encourage dancers to enjoy their journey throughout their careers and to be thankful for each step along the way.

Monsters of Hip Hop is a two long dance days at the DCU center in Worcester MA.

Chaperoned by Hip Hop faculty members Katie Kellerman-Demick and Jen Pinard, advanced JLDC Hip Hop Dancers: Billy Cohen, Jonny Cohen, Jenny Dorfman, Lexi Greshkowitz, Rachel Levy, Isabel Meltzer, Jen Rosenthal, Marina Vachon, Ellie Wenneker were joined by:

JLDC Alumna and reigning Hip Hop Queen: Whitney Mulhern

Each day consisted of 5 classes in different Hip Hop styles with the top industry choreographers: JaQuel Knight, Kevin Maher, Marty Kudelka, and Justin Biebers current choreographer, Nick DeMoura.

A unique feature of MOHH was the “mock audition” on Sunday morning that gave our students a feel for what a real audition process is…..what it would like to “land a job” in the dance industry!

Another highlight was watching “the greatest people in the biz” perform dances that they taught throughout the weekend in a closing performance ceremony

JLDC students “showed them how to weeerk it” says their teacher and JLDC Creative Director, Jen Pinard as they tested their ability to change gears every hour, pick up new choreography and then remember it! Our kids” had a ball getting their chance to take class with “National Hip Hop Greats” as well as advanced Hip Hop students from all over the country noted Katie.

-Our students left challenged and inspired after a weekend of fun together taking great classes and meeting friends along the way!

JLDC students “weerked” it at Monsters of Hip Hop!

It would be a difficult feat to run a fully flat race within the city limits of Newton, and the Chilly Half Marathon has a few rolling hills (the region is known as “The Newton Hills” by commentators during the Boston Marathon), but the race was designed purposefully to include a nice level start and finish. Runners leave from Newton South High School and briefly head south in the Chestnut Hill Village section, before turning north under Route 9, then across Beacon Street in the Waban neighborhood. This is the out-and-back section, where all the uphills also become downhills!

At about Mile 4 the course goes into the clockwise loop section along Lowell and Cabot Streets and turns east toward the grand Chestnut Hill neighborhood. Then the gradual climb starts after Mile 5 to eventually crest the top of Heartbreak near Boston College at Mile 8 before the swoop down to Mile 10. At this point on the course, those runners who dare to pause would be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Boston skyline. The final leg repeats the gentle start near the Charles River Country Club for an easy cruise into the finish at the high school.

That Race was this morning at 7:30am and every time I got a little bit tired I thought about my friend Chelsea, her battle with liver disease and how lucky I am to even be healthy enough to be out there running. It was amazing to be running alongside all of Chelsea’s family members raising over $4000.00 that went to the American Liver Foundation!

When not cross- training for performance in dance and running, I am a teacher at the Joanne Langione Dance Center in Newton, Ma. Seeing several of my students out supporting me last Sunday was yet another highlight of the race.

My dance students study and train hard and need a combination of both aerobic and anaerobic exercise to become truly strong, lean and fit dancers!
Dance is anaerobic exercise that uses your muscles at a high intensity for a short period of time. As a result, it can help develop stronger muscles, and improve the amount of oxygen one can consume during exercise and thus improve your cardio-respiratory fitness . This means your endurance and ability to fight fatigue will improve. This is why I suggest that runners dance and dancers run!

Overall, anaerobic exercise burns fewer calories than does aerobic exercise and may be somewhat less beneficial for cardiovascular fitness. However, it is better at building strength and muscle mass and still benefits the heart and lungs. In the long run,( no pun intended) increased muscle mass helps a person become leaner and manage his weight, because muscle uses large amounts of calories.

Performing a 17 minutes piece recently at the Tsai performance center at BU with the LeeRoc Dance Company I realized just how much my cross training makes me the dancer I am and I am happy to be able to pass this teaching on to my young dancers at JLDC.

To Chelsea!

All my best, Emily
