As a student of the Elementary level at Joanne Langione Dance Center, many opportunities and exciting moments await you throughout the year. However, many would agree that the chance to perform a self choreographed piece is paramount to the others. Rachel, Jen, Madison and I had been discussing the creation of our own dance since the very beginning of Danceworks 4, after watching older students present their own. We were inspired and eager to begin the journey ourselves, and to see where the experience would take us, in addition to growing into more developed performers. The four of us quickly settled on basing our piece around our bond, and how we will always be there for each other. No other song seemed to represent this better than “I Got You”, by Leona Lewis. Her song speaks about how you can always find a place to be yourself with the people you can rely on, similar to our friendship. Not having any previous experience, we were a little lost at first. Together, we had to ponder how the friendship between us could be portrayed to an audience through movement and expression, without hugging each other the whole time. We quickly realized how tedious the process is, as most of our time was put into attempting to find the true meaning of our song, and what the audience would take away from our dance. After 4 months of pouring our hearts into grueling hour rehearsals, our outline of the dance was written, costumes were picked out, and most of all, choreography was complete. We are counting down the days to January 21st, when we will perform
together, and cannot wait to have accomplished our very own student choreography.
